Hi, I’m John Hickey with Florida Surf Lessons. You can reach us at www.floridasurflessons.com. We are located out of Central and South Florida. More on the introductory of standing up on the board. Once you are paddling into the waves, you want to stand up. Standing up is a hard thing to do. I’ve got two different ways. I’ve got the fast waves, the mediocre and the slowly. We are going to start off with the slowly and basically it is four steps. Once you are on the board like this, your first step is you want to have your hands inside, you want those thumbs to touch because the middle of the board is going to be the sturdiest part of the board. So what you are going to do is have them right here. You don’t want your hands on the rails. This is a no no; it is rocking the board on you. So what you are going to do is have your hands there, push up and when you push up you are going to bring your back leg first to right there. Now right from here you are going to bring your other leg forward so it is going to be your front leg. Notice how my legs are in the middle of the board. I got this back leg parallel to the back of the board. I’ve got this leg off at a 45 degree angle. My knees are bent which you want to have your knees bent. Now if you are bent over like this this causes weight because my head weighs a lot. I’m going to be pushing that way. If I am standing straight up and got my legs locked and the wave pushes me, I am doing this and I am going back. You want to do it nice and slow and keep those knees nice and bent and back straight. We will be right back in just a moment.
